Description and uses: Manganese’s (Mn) main oxide, with Mn in oxidation state +IV.
Used as colouring agent (pigment) in pottery glazes. Makes up at least 30 % of the dry electrolyte in dry Zinc cells and batteries.
A powerful oxidant capable of oxidising most halides (except fluorides) to their elemental state in acid conditions. It oxidises sulphites (and SO2) to sulphates and oxalic acid to CO2, being itself reduced to the Mn(II) (manganous) oxidation state.
With Al powder it forms a borderline flash powder, reducing the oxide to its metal but with poor yield and unpredictable results.
Fused with a strong alkali and an oxidiser (typically KOH + KClO3 or KNO3) it’s oxidised to manganate (VI) anions (K2MnO4) of a typical emerald green colour but this compound cannot be isolated. This unstable oxidation state can be further increased to VII, or permanganate (KMnO4).
MnO2 dissolves in strong H2SO4 with some difficulty, forming Mn3+ cations (manganic ions) of a beautiful deep wine red. This oxidation state is unstable and Mn3+ is a powerful oxidiser. Like Mn (IV) it oxidises chlorides to elemental chlorine.
