Ferric Oxide – Fe2O3 – 200 g – (Iron (III) Oxide) – Hematite

Chemical formula: Fe2O3

Synonyms: iron (III) oxide, iron trioxide, Hematite (mineral), red iron oxide
Amount: 200 g

Appearance and odour: fine reddish/brown powder without appreciable odour (actual product is darker than photo)

Grade: 99 %, high grade

Description and uses: for hobbyists, red iron oxide is perhaps most used for Thermite reactions

Fe2O3(s) + 2 Al(s) === > 2 Fe(l) + Al2O3(l)

This reaction produces the iron and alumina in the molten state, due to the fact that the reaction is extremely exothermic. The metal then separates out. Industrially iron is still produced this way for in situ generation of molten Iron, see welding of rail for instance.
