Description and uses: calcium hydroxide is a strong alkali, albeit only sparingly soluble in water.

Saturated solutions of it in water are referred to as lime water and serve as a carbon dioxide (CO2) detector due to formation of insoluble calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Bubbling exhaled human breath through lime water thus causes it to cloud over:

Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(aq) → CaCO3(s) + H2O(l)

At about 512 C calcium hydroxide starts losing water, turning into lime (quick lime, CaO):

Ca(OH)2 → CaO + H2O

Slaked lime finds uses in a wide range of application fields.
